are about 15 miles of sandy beaches along the Tendring coast, from Walton-On-The-Naze in the north east to Lee-Over-Sands at the south west.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday afternoon (10 October 2011)\u00a0 low tide was at about\u00a0 5:20pm.\u00a0 I went to Frinton beach about 3pm and took these photographs<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=292\"><img loading=\"lazy\" wooden breakwaters that are mostly buried in sand at Frinton and Clacton.\u00a0 Large rock breakwaters at Jaywick.<\/p>\n<p>At Clacton and Jaywick there is a large amount of sand in front of the sea wall that reaches almost to the top of the sea wall.<\/p>\n<p>In between visiting Frinton and Clacton I went to Holland-On-Sea which is in between Frinton and Clacton and took these photographs at about 3:45pm<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=306\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-306\" title=\"DSCN0937\" src=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/DSCN0937-1024x819.png\" alt=\"DSCN0937\" width=\"640\" height=\"511\" http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/DSCN0937.png 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Probably only 10 or 20 yards of beach, compared to about 100 yards or so at Frinton and Clacton.<\/p>\n<p>The breakwaters are clearly in a very bad state of repair and from the height of the vertical posts there used to be many more boards.<\/p>\n<p>If the boards went up to height of the top horizontal bar in the picture below perhaps the beach between the breakwaters would be full of sand and the breakwaters buried, as they are in Frinton and Clacton.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=296\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-296\" title=\"DSCN0945\" below the top of the sea wall.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=297\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-297\" level of the top of the boards.\u00a0 Having sand in front of the sea wall is essential as it protects the wall.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=298\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-298\" title=\"DSCN0948\" src=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/DSCN0948-1024x819.png\" alt=\"DSCN0948\" width=\"640\" height=\"511\" srcset=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/DSCN0948-1024x819.png 1024w, 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But without effective breakwaters the sand is washed away, leaving the sea wall vulnerable to be destroyed by the sea.\u00a0 Compare the height of the sand in relative to the sea wall in this photograph with the photographs of Clacton beach.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=300\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-300\" title=\"DSCN0953\" src=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/DSCN0953-1024x819.png\" alt=\"DSCN0953\" width=\"640\" 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But just a few hundred yards north of Holland-On-Sea another bay with a very different look.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=301\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-301\" title=\"DSCN0957\" http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/DSCN0957.png 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It seems clear to me that the reason there is so little beach at Holland-On-Sea is that the level of the sand is much lower than at Frinton or Clacton.\u00a0 This means that even at low tide the sea can still be near to the sea wall.<\/p>\n<p>As there are still some posts, surely the answer is obvious,\u00a0 just fix some boards to the posts.\u00a0\u00a0 Once the breakwaters are repaired the sea should fill the beach up with sand again.<\/p>\n<p>Well the answer may be obvious but it is not simple.\u00a0 I understand the Environment Agency have the sole responsibility for works on the beach and EA has declared that breakwaters do not work.\u00a0 Not only will they not repair the breakwaters they will not allow anyone else to do so either.<\/p>\n<p>If the sea wall fails, then it is possible the cliffs behind the wall will fall, risking damage to the road and houses above the cliffs.<\/p>\n<p>All for the want of a few bits of planking.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I live in Kirby le Soken which is by
