{"id":378,"date":"2011-10-24T09:09:47","date_gmt":"2011-10-24T08:09:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/?p=378"},"modified":"2011-10-24T16:04:33","modified_gmt":"2011-10-24T15:04:33","slug":"holland-on-sea-beach-then-and-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/holland-on-sea-beach-then-and-now\/","title":{"rendered":"Holland-On-Sea Beach Then And Now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After posting photographs of the beach on Holland-On-Sea I have been sent some photographs from a few decades ago.<\/p>\n<p>At Holland Haven looking south.\u00a0 It is clear that the level of sand is much lower, at a guess may be 5 feet lower. Also the breakwaters have not been repaired as most of the boards between the posts have disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>In both photos the sand comes to about the top of the boards that are there. Could recovering the beach be as simple as repairing the breakwaters?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=369\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2748\" were taken at about 11am on Thursday 20 October 2011 when low tide was at about 11:30, though it was a neap tide.<\/p>\n<p>And looking north it is easier to see that<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The breakwaters are quite short.<\/li>\n<li>There is a pattern of alternating long and short breakwaters.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=371\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2592\" height=\"1944\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-371\" title=\"DSCN1057\" src=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/DSCN1057.jpg\" alt=\"DSCN1057\" srcset=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/DSCN1057.jpg 2592w, http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/DSCN1057-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/DSCN1057-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2592px) 100vw, 2592px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Just south of Kings Avenue looking north, less sand and broken breakwaters compared to the past.<\/p>\n<p>Considering this is nearly low tide it is amazing how little beach there is.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=368\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2012\" height=\"532\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-368\" title=\"kingsparade_thenNow\" src=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/kingsparade_thenNow.png\" alt=\"kingsparade_thenNow\" 300w, http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/kingsparade_thenNow-1024x270.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2012px) 100vw, 2012px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nAnd looking south you can see there is no sand here at all.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=372\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2592\" height=\"1944\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-372\" title=\"DSCN1060\" src=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/DSCN1060.jpg\" alt=\"DSCN1060\" and the break waters are buried.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=373\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2592\" height=\"1944\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-373\" title=\"DSCN1071\" src=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/DSCN1071.jpg\" alt=\"DSCN1071\" srcset=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/DSCN1071.jpg 2592w, http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/DSCN1071-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/DSCN1071-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2592px) 100vw, 2592px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And just south of the pier there is still a wide beach.\u00a0 The sand by the wall is dry indicating the sea does not cover it, at least on neap tides.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=374\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2592\" height=\"1944\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-374\" title=\"DSCN1072\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2592px) 100vw, 2592px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But immediately north of the pier the beach is lower, narrower and there is no dry sand.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=376\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2592\" height=\"1944\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-376\" title=\"DSCN1077\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2592px) 100vw, 2592px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And after 2 breakwaters there is no beach at all.<\/p>\n<p>Remember this about low tide, though on a neap tide.<\/p>\n<p>Further north, towards Holland-On-Sea, the breakwaters seem to be much further apart.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=377\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2592\" height=\"1944\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-377\" title=\"DSCN1075\" src=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/DSCN1075.jpg\" alt=\"DSCN1075\" srcset=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/DSCN1075.jpg 2592w, http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/DSCN1075-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/DSCN1075-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2592px) 100vw, 2592px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And south of the pier again.\u00a0 The breakwaters are much longer than at Holland-On-Sea.<\/p>\n<p>The wooden breakwaters have boards up to the top of their posts, and are almost completely buried in sand.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=370\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2592\" height=\"1944\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-370\" title=\"DSCN1080\" src=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/DSCN1080.jpg\" alt=\"DSCN1080\" srcset=\"http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/DSCN1080.jpg 2592w, http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/DSCN1080-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/jeremyshiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/DSCN1080-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2592px) 100vw, 2592px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It seems to me that the lack of breakwaters has allowed sand to be washed away.<\/p>\n<p>What sand remains is lower, which allows the sea to cover more of the beach at low tide, even all of the beach in some places.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s just like the difference between the shallow and deep ends of a swimming pool.<\/p>\n<p>If the beach is not restored then the sea wall wash against the sea wall at all states of the tide, allowing it to erode the sea wall even faster.<\/p>\n<p>Could the solution be to be building longer breakwaters
