Some spring tides can be almost a meter higher. Clearly the sea has moved so much sand in front of the sea wall that even at high tide the sea can not reach the wall at all.

This band of sand between the wall and sea is important as it protects the wall.

It is because there is no such band of sand protecting the sea wall at Holland-on-Sea that the sea wall has to be constantly repaired.

This picture shows the step left by the sea at high tide and the dry sand in front of the wall.

A wooden breakwater (or groyne) can be seen in the distance, it is almost completely buried in sand up to the top of the vertical posts. By contrast at Holland-on-Sea the posts stand about 10 feet above what sand is left. Could this be because the groynes have not been repaired so the sea has washed almost all the sand away?

For comparison here is a picture of the beach at Holland-on-Sea taken on 7 October 2011.

Snow fell in Tendring on the night of 4/5 February 2012.
